Basic Safety Training (BST) is a mandatory STCW course required for all seafarers working on commercial ships. It provides fundamental skills and knowledge to ensure personal safety and the safety of others at sea.

Course Modules

BST consists of four key modules:

  1. Personal Survival Techniques (PST)

    • Emergency procedures, abandoning ship
    • Use of lifejackets, life rafts, and survival equipment
    • Survival at sea techniques
  2. Fire Prevention and Firefighting (FPFF)

    • Fire types and prevention
    • Firefighting equipment and extinguishing techniques
    • Use of breathing apparatus and rescue procedures
  3. Elementary First Aid (EFA)

    • Basic first aid and CPR
    • Treating injuries, burns, and hypothermia
    • Medical emergency response
  4. Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (PSSR)

    • Safe working practices onboard
    • Crew responsibilities and teamwork
    • Pollution prevention and emergency response

Course Duration

  • Typically 5 days, including practical and theoretical training.

Certification & Validity

  • Upon successful completion, candidates receive an STCW Basic Safety Training Certificate, valid for 5 years.
  • Renewal requires refresher training.

BST is essential for all seafarers to ensure a safe working environment and compliance with international maritime safety standards.
